About Refracted Violence

Refracted Violence is an interactive web experience which uses audio-visual materials gathered during the Screening Violence research project.

Screening Violence showed films on the subject of civil conflict to participants in five countries: Algeria, Argentina, Colombia, Indonesia, and Northern Ireland. We then asked the participants to reflect on their own experiences of civil conflict.

With their consent, we present some of the footage we captured of these reflections.

Refracted Violence is designed to allow users to explore this material in a variety of non-linear ways, and to present our participants’ stories to new audiences and new interpretations.

Both projects are funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

The following films were selected to give a glimpse into the political conflicts of their respective places. They were screened in each of the other countries represented in the Screening Violence project.
